Francis

I met Francis for the first time more than ten years ago in his small village in the south of France called Bellecombe-Tarendol. Nested in the pre-alps, it is an idyllic, quiet and peaceful place. Francis, 58 years old now, has told me many stories of his youth, as he was raised among 8 brothers and sisters, struggling to make a living. With nothing more than his strong arms and his wilful mind, Francis built over the years a respectable farm producing cherries, apricots, plums, lavender and grapes. Every summer, the little streets of the village fill with young seasonal workers, who come to help at the farm. Francis has always been a hard worker, raising early in the morning and going to sleep late at night. And when he’s not out in the fields, he’s helping his two sons set up their own business.

This film is part of a broader project called HUMANS founded by Simon Sticker.

New Film : Filling Pool

Last June I bought the Lumix GH2. Times were busy and I didn’t really manage to play around with it and test it. But a month later I went for a week-end in the South of France. It was only after filming some random shots the entire afternoon that the idea of this short video came to my mind. I intentionally did not add any music because the sound plays a crucial role in intensifying the contrasts of this film.

HUMANS – a project about the human condition

In January 2011 I wrote for the first time to Simon Sticker. Back then, I asked for some advice about the value added of going to a film school. But since, I’ve been following his latest and most ambitious project: HUMANS.

What drives me are the people. And the people are the reason why I tell those stories.

Simon Sticker is a visual storyteller. The HUMANS project is a 6 months journey through Africa – from Cape Town to Cairo. And it all started last June. Combining photography and video, Simon crafts beautiful portraits of the people he meets along the way. With this project he hopes to be able to give a deeper understanding or impression of the lives people live: their dreams, their personal goals, what influences them and what makes them proud – and shape their answers into short portrait-films of each person. Those interviews are then published to the website to create a mosaic of portraits from around the world and to show more of the universal side of human life.

I want to create an understanding. I want to challenge people to think differently of certain types of stories and think differently of their picture in their minds.

New Shot: Davos in miniature fake

This picture was taken during a hike in the moutains near Davos, Switzerland. On the way down, I was surprised by the view of Davos and the lake Davosersee. It all seemed fake. It just felt like a movie scene: a set up village where the grass is nice and green and the houses are made of plastic. To stress the feeling, I used the Tilt-Shift effect that creates this miniature fake.

New Shot: Waiter

This picture is taken from the 1st floor at Madame Moustache in Brussels. During the first days of spring, tables and chairs are put outside on the Vismarkt. As I was sitting at the window, I watched the waiter cross the street to serve clients.
